I started writing a devotional when I was going through unemployment after university in 2014. It was very challenging for me and I still wrestle with my identity being wrapped up in ‘what I do’ at times. I had only written it for seven days, but thought I would share it here to maybe encourage someone going through a tough time regarding work or lack of it.
Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of compassion and the God of all comfort, who comforts us in all our troubles, so that we can comfort those in any trouble with the comfort we ourselves receive from God. For just as we share abundantly in the sufferings of Christ, so also our comfort abounds through Christ. 2 Corinthians 1:3-5
One of the struggles of being unemployed is a sense of loneliness and isolation. Days are spent alone as the search for jobs leaves us attached to the internet. Sometimes it becomes so hard that emotions can ebb and flow, perhaps even bursting out like a water cannon. Anger, despair, sadness, low self-esteem. Stretched, pushed and pulled is how our bodies can feel under the strain.
However, our emotions can force us to look at ourselves and take our weary eyes away from the God who bottles every tear and provides all the comfort we could ever need. God also places people in our lives to edify, uplift and encourage us in these troubling times. God is the Father of compassion. He is the God of ALL comfort. The above passage says that God comforts us in ALL our troubles. Whether that is worrying about unemployment, health, family, work, children, the government or an aching body. Whatever it is, He comforts us in it ALL.
One of His purposes for comforting us is so that we can comfort other people with that same comfort we have received from God. Do you know someone who is unemployed? Perhaps you know someone on the brink of being made redundant or about to start an uncertain retirement. You have experienced this wilderness of unemployment. As you have found comfort from God Himself and from other people, you are equipped to go and comfort them.
Prayer for today…
God of all comfort and compassion, who bottles my tears and understands my fears, show me someone today who desperately needs the same comfort You have freely bestowed upon me. Thank you that you are the God of ALL comfort who comforts us in ALL things. I pray that I have a real sense of your comfort as I go through this fresh new day with you. Help me to keep my eyes on you always. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
