Hope in an Anxious World by Helen Thorne is a wonderful book that helps the reader to understand anxiety more clearly, find suitable strategies to implement when dealing with anxiety, and addresses the lies that we often believe when faced with anxiety. These lies are the chapter headings in the second section of the book and may be familiar to you: I’m All Alone, Everything Is Out of Control, I Have No Way of Knowing Where to Turn, I Can’t Carry On, This Is All My Fault and There’s No Hope for Me. With each lie, Helen is able to skilfully, helpfully and importantly bring hope front and centre to those thoughts.
What immediately struck me about this book is how I would feel comfortable giving a copy to both Christians and non-Christians. It’s a short book written with both audiences in mind and covers an incredibly important topic for these times. Many are wanting reassurance, encouragement and good news, and there is plenty to be found here.
Many people are struggling with their mental health, especially anxiety. We are living in very anxious times and it could be given to anyone who is afflicted with anxious thoughts and feelings. Helen writes with grace, compassion, wisdom and knowledge as a trained counsellor. Her writing puts the reader at ease, whilst providing helpful information about anxiety, practical tips to cope, and points ultimately to God who is our true hope in an anxious world.
As someone who struggles with anxiety, I was very thankful for this warm account which offers so much in so few pages. It’s not overwhelming, but inviting. It’s a comfort for anyone who is walking through a time or season of anxiety. If you or someone you know could do with some words of light to speak into the darkness that anxiety brings, this is definitely a balm to help.
